Quién iba a pensar que alguien con una cara de ángel iba a participar en actos ilícitos como fraude bancario y uso de pasaportes falsos? Este es el caso de Kristina Svechinskaya, una niña de 21-22 años de origen ruso, quien fue acusada junto a un grupo de estudiantes de Nueva York por un robo estimado en $3 millones de bancos de Estados Unidos y unos 9.5 millones de bancos de Bretaña. Si la encuentran culpable, podría verse con 40 años de cárcel! En nuestra opinión deberían de perdonarla solo por tener unos ojos celestiales! Ustedes que dicen….

Who would have thought that someone with an angel face would be part of illegal activities like bank fraud and use of fake passports? Well, that is the case of Kristina Svechinskaya, a lovely 21-22 russian, who has been charged along some group of students from New York for a theft estimated in $3 millions from Banks of the States and some 9.5 millions from British banks. If she is found guilty, she could face 40 years in prison! In our opinion they should give her a small punishment or pardon her just cause of those heavenly eyes! What do you think.

Sometimes we disregard the importance of certain people we meet or have a certain business relationship. I’m talking about our tailors, barbers or groomers, bar tenders, etc. Some men don’t really know the importance of being friends with people with these jobs, or at least knowing certain people who are extremely good in their field. So that’s what this post will be about. Knowing the importance of having a good tailor, having a good barber, having a good bartender, etc.

The importance of knowing a good tailor.

You can never underestimate the significance of a tailor. He’s the one who can fix your suits, tell you what to combine when you have no clue, and most of all, help you to seek out your own look for the event. If you have a very very good tailor, keep it a secret for yourself. You don’t want for everybody to know where do you get all those nice suits fix. Also, have two different tailors, one for those clothes you wear daily, and one for those special days when you want to excel. And remember, there is nothing more good looking than a tailored suit made just for you.

The importance of knowing a good barber.

A barber can sometimes be like a priest and a psychiatrist, (actually everyone of this small list can be). You can talk to him about anything that’s bothering you and still you know that the conversation your having will be kept between the both of you. Almost all barbers have a profound knowledge about general things, so use this to your advantage, talk to him about almost any topic you want. My barber knows a lot about politics, economy, literature and music, and every time I go with him, I always learn something new and always have an incredible update on what’s happening in the world. Besides, knowing a good barber is always something nice, since he can tell you honestly what style of hair goes with you.

The importance of knowing a good bartender.

Let’s face it, as men we like to go to bars and pubs and have a few drinks and see beautiful ladies in the night. But we always have a favorite place to go, and it that place we like to have our very own bar tender who can already give us just by looking at our face the drink we need. He, like the ones before, can really tell us a lot about interesting facts, tips and knowledge. And not only that, but can help us get lucky in the pub.

This list can go on and on and on, but for now, lets stay with the three above. Always remember to have an open mind and always be respectful, and really try to make a good relationship, cause in this world everybody needs somebody sometime. So that’s my tip for all of you today, hope you like it and take it in consideration. Will have more coming up this week.

Anton Corbijn & Depeche Mode

Se puede decir que a veces las colaboraciones de un artista con una banda pueden dar buenos frutos. Este es el caso de Anton Corbijn, originario de Los Países Bajos, director, talentoso fotógrafo y diseñador. Ha trabajado con artistas de la talla de U2, Morrissey, R.E.M. Bon Jovi, The Rolling Stones, Joy Division, entre otros más, asi como también ha colaborado con portadas para revistas como Esquire, Rolling Stone Mag, Details, The Times Magazine y The Word.

Ha realizado dos películas largometraje. La primera, Control (2007) que trata sobre la vida del cantante de Joy Division, Ian Curtis, fue un gran éxito, aparte de ser nominada a un BAFTA como mejor película británica y ganadora de tres premios en el Festival de Cannes. La segunda, estrenada a mediados del 2010 y protagonisada por George Clooney, The American, que en nuestra opinión fue una buena película aunque los teasers y trailers la hayan promocionado como una película de acción, la cual realmente no es.

Pero no estamos para hablar de todo su trabajo, ya que eso nos llevaría bastante tiempo si realmente nos profundizamos en ello. Este post es para mencionar la gran colaboración que ha tenido con uno de nuestras bandas favoritas de todos los tiempos: Depeche Mode. Desde que dirijió el video musical en 1986 del single “A Question of Time”, se puede decir que ambos forjaron una relación que duraría en el tiempo. Y no solo ha dirigido videos musicales de ellos, sino que también ha sido director creativo y diseñador de varios albums.

Nothing Beats A Good Scotch

After having a long day at work, the best reward you can have is a good drink, a real mans drinks. Yes, you know what kind of drink I’m talking about. Scotch. Whisky, as it’s spelled in Scottish, and if you ask them, it’s the real way to spell it.

Now I must say that I do enjoy having other booze, like a good Russian Vodka or a very nice Mature Dark Rum. But really, nothing says more about you as a Man than having a glass of Whisky in your hand. It also says a lot how you drink that whisky, if you take it straight, with a couple of ice cubes, or if you are a little bit soft and have to mix it with a soda or sparkling soda. If you do the last thing, please please please, get some balls! Not trying to offend you but every real men knows that a good whisky doesn’t need nothing more with it.

Something that you also need to know, not because you have to but because its good for your general knowledge and because its always nice to know what you drink, is a little bit of the history of Whisky and the different kinds. You should know that its original name was ”Aqua Vitae” or “water of life” for its healing properties. Also know the steps on how scotch is made; it involves malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation.

The Four Kinds You Should Know:

Single Malt (100% malted barley)
Vatted or Pure Malt (simply a blend of single malts from different distilleries)
Single Grain (in single grain distillation, the grain mash (usually wheat) is fed into column stills and drips down, while steam rises and captures some of the alcohol)
Blended (Most blends contain two or three grain whiskys and as many as 40 malts, smoother than single malts)

So now go ahead and have a real drink and share it with a friend, a brother, a father, and remember to always make a good toast before the first sip. That’s the way it should always be.

MANTARAYA’S Short List For In-Home Parties!

1. El ambiente y la iluminación debe de formar parte de la fiesta. No uses mucha luz artificial ni prendas todos los focos de la sala o del comedor. El uso de candelas (en sus diferentes formas y en distintos candelabros) crea un ambiente místico, cómodo y suave para la fiesta, especialmente ayuda para poder ligar chavas. Recuerda que “En términos de luz, no hay nada mejor que la luz de vela. Pero recuerda que no quieres el cuarto muy oscuro. Vas por relajarte, no por dar un aire de romance.” (John Derian, artista y dueño del John Derian Company)

The ambient and lighting must be an important part of the party. Do not use to much artificial light or go switching on all the bulbs of your living or dining room. The use of candlelight (in the different forms and with the different chandeliers) creates a mystic, comfortable and smooth ambient for the party. 2. Toma en cuenta invitar a las personas correctas. La fiesta se crea por las personas que la hacen. Asi que recuerda invitar personas agradables, llevaderas, simpáticas, que puedan ofrecer una buena conversación y que ayuden a levantar el ánimo de la fiesta con los demás invitados. Claro no siempre vas a tener la suerte de tener los mejores invitados (ya que siempre existe la posibilidad de que alguien lleve consigo a alguien que nadie soporta o que tu mejor amiga lleve a su novio celoso y malencarado). Pero recuerda de invitar a todos tus amigos, aunque ya sepas que no vayan a ir, son tus amigos y realmente haces la fiesta por ellos.

Invite the right people. The party makes itself by the people who make it happen. So remember to invite nice, bearable, outgoing, people who can bring good conversations, nice vibes and help to keep up the mood of the party with the rest of the guests. Sure not always are you going to have the best guests (there always exists the chance that someone brings that guy that no one stands, or that your best friend brings her jealous boyfriend). Now with your real friends, invite all of them, no matter if you already know that some of them won’t come, they are your friends and you are doing this party for them.

3. Alcohol, alcohol, alcohol, alcohol. Porque vamos a mentir, todo es más fácil con alcohol. Somos más extrovertidos con el alcohol, más divertidos, platicamos más, y todo pero todo se ve mejor. Así que como anfitrión, es la responsabilidad de uno de que haya licor en la fiesta. Si no tienes tanto dinero o no pudiste comprar mucho, siempre recuerda pedirle a los invitados aunque sea una botella por pareja. Eso si, asegúrate de que haya hielo, mixers, vasos suficientes (para no dañar nada es preferible usar vasos plásticos de fiesta, aunque realmente no hay nada mejor y de mucha clase que el vaso de vidrio para el trago), incluso muestra mucha atención con las personas que no andan tomándo mucho o que no tienen trago en su mano. Ofréceles con cortesía, incluso lleva ya unos preparados para darles a ellos, aunque sea tragos sin alcohol. También es una buena oportunidad de ser creativo y probar nuevas mezclas y crear nuevos y distintos tragos, pero recuerden en no caer en el rol del “bartender” y ser el que siempre sirve los tragos. Siempre mantengan el rol principal de “anfitrión”.

Alcohol, alcohol, alcohol, alcohol. Why lie, everything is more easier with booze. We are more outgoing with it, more fun, talk more and everything looks more interesting. So as the host of your party it is your job to see there is a nice stash of it. If you don’t have, ask friends to bring some bottles, at least one per couple. Also, you have to look out for ice, mixers, cups (it can be plastic colored cups but nothing beats a real glass). You must even pay attention and show interest that at least everyone has a drink in their hands, even if it’s not an alcoholic drink. Also you can be creative and try to come up with new and different cocktails, but remember not to fall into the role of the “bartender” and spend all night serving drinks. Get into your main role as the “host”.

4. Música, ipod, buen stereo, playlist, o si quieren llevarlo al siguiente nivel, dj personal. Toda fiesta debe de tener el principal ingrediente y el verdadero espíritu de la misma: la música. Un buen playlist de principio a fin puede definir el tipo de fiesta, recuerdos y comentarios que se lleven los invitados. Es recomendable que sea como una montaña rusa, empezar con un hit, subir un poco la temperatura (pero no tanto), luego mantener un tipo de subibaja pero siempre con canciones dinámicas, bailables, nuevas, frescas, legendarias, que hagan que la gente quiera cantar, reir, saltar, en fin, que sea como otro anfitrión. Al final de la noche, o cuando la fiesta esté llegando a su fin, cambiar el playlist por algo más suave, no muy tranquilo, pero que sea perfecto para terminar la noche con buenas conversaciones, y quien sabe, a lo mejor hasta para muchos finales felices….

Music, Ipod, good stereo system, a playlist, or if you want to get it to the next level, personal dj. Every party must have the main ingredient and the true spirit of itself: the music. A good playlist from beginning to end can define the type of party and the comments it might have by the guests. We advice that it should be like a rollercoaster, starts with a hit, slowly raise the level (not to much), then try to keep it between ups and downs (not to down of course) always with dynamic, new and fresh songs that would make the crowd get up and want to dance, sing, laugh, jump, anyways, make it like if it were the other host. At the end of the night or when the party its reaching its end, change the playlist to something more smooth and chill so it can be a perfect atmosphere to take on good conversations, and who knows, even to a lot of happy endings…

This song from Marvin Gaye always a sure hit to start, in our opinion….

5. Hasta ahora hemos hablado sobre el ambiente, las bebidas, la compañía y la música. Pero hay algo muy importante que se debe de pensar a la hora de patrocinar una fiesta, y eso es el vestuario del anfitrión. Recordar que uno es quien está invitando a los amigos a llegar a nuestra casa para pasar una noche agradable y divertida. Por eso lo que uno decide ponerse, dice mucho sobre como quiere que los invitados se imaginen la fiesta. Algo elegante casual, cómodo, limpio y planchado. Llevar un accesorio que destaque, ya sea un sombrero, un collar, brazalete, y por lo menos una prenda de vestir que sea completamente nueva o nunca antes usada. Asimismo recordar que el lugar sea presentable y se vea limpio y agradable para la fiesta. Piensenlo así, el cuarto, sala, comedor o donde vaya a ser el punto de la fiesta, también tenga ropaje nuevo.

So far we have talked about the atmosphere, the drinks, guests, music, but have left out another important ingredient: the wardrobe. As host, you must wear something neat and clean, since it will say a lot of how your guests will perceive your party. Choose something, classy, casual elegant, comfortable and fresh. Try to choose wisely what to wear, some interesting accessories like a hat, bracelets or necklace, and always wear something new or never worn. Also remember that the place is presentable and looks clean and nice for the party. Think about it like this, the room, living room or where it will be the point of the party, also have new clothes.

Otras cosas en que pensar / Other things you should think about:

la comida o los aperitivos. No se trata de una cena, pero siempre es bueno tener “comida para picar”, ya sea nachos, poporopos, manías, papalinas o algo dulce como brownies o galletas. El objetivo no es que la gente llegue solo a sentarse a comer, pero que si haya comida con la que se pueda interactuar y movilizar facilmente.
food or appetizers. It isn’t dinner you’re hosting, but it’s always nice to have something to “bite”, like nachos, popcorn, peanuts, chips or something sweet like brownies or coockies. The objective is not for people to come in and sit just to eat, but to have food and at the same time interact with others and move around easily.
espacio. Saber el límite de espacio que uno tiene para que la gente que uno invite no se sienta en una multitud pero que tampoco se sienta el lugar vacío. Considerar que hayan lugares para sentarse y para bailar.
space. Know your place’s space limit so that the guests won’t feel too crowded but also won’t feel as it’s to empty. Consider seating spots and dance floor.
volume. la consideración con los vecinos y aparte tomar en cuenta que la música no sea tan alta para que la gente la pueda disfrutar y al mismo tiempo platicar con tranquilidad y facilidad.
